I feel like my weeks begin with Saturday, since that’s the day of our Phoenix residency, and first of the Saturday, Monday, Tuesday rotation of shows. Well, and now we have a Friday morning residency on KWSS 106.7 FM.

We played a packed Rogue Bar last Saturday, thanks in large part to our friends Gospel Claws, What Laura Says, and Black Carl. I nearly toppled over while playing the second song — which usually doesn’t bode well for the rest of the set — but I managed to get myself together enough for the rest of the night. My favorite song to play right now is “I Got You (At the End of the Century)” by Wilco. We never ever learn cover songs, but we wanted to add a bunch to our repertoire for emergencies, and this was the one I picked. It’s such a simple song, and I feel like Jeff Tweedy’s written 20 just as good and similar to it, but it’s also one of those songs I wish I could write. Not the song exactly as it is, but something that has its general feel and power. That’s got to be a common feeling; liking the songs you write, but really wishing you had written the songs of others.

The newest thing this past week was the beginning of our Friday residency on the Morning Infidelity Show on KWSS 106.7 FM. I’m  not really sure how this station exists or when it started existing, but it’s independent, ad-free radio with a pretty decent antenna signal.

The Morning Infidelity is what I think is referred to as a “morning zoo” show. There’s lots of banter between a number of hosts, some controlled zaniness, and an ever-ready library of sound effects to pepper the conversations with BOINGS or MOOOOS or D’OH!s. We had to play a game called “Eff My Life” where Beef Vegan, host of The Morning Infidelity,” read emails complaining of some situation. We were the panel who had to decide if the complainant was being a big baby or if his or her life was Eff’d.

I just realized that there’s no reason the two have to be mutually exclusive. Maybe I”ll bring this up next week.

This week we were booked at the same time as Tom Green, who was in town for a couple of stand-up shows. Originally, I was hoping to be out of the studio before Tom Green came in, because he seems like he’s very good at making people feel uncomfortable, and I’m a person very good at feeling uncomfortable, and I’d rather just skirt the whole thing — but my worry was unfounded. He was an all-around decent, enjoyable guy to sit in a room with for an hour or so. And he gave us tickets to his show later that night. AND, his assistant who was there filming him for a documentary they’re making had just seen us in LA, and is coming back to see us this week. You grasps those people you know are showing up to your show to your heart greedily. Like Gollum and his Precious. Metaphorically.

Lesson for the Week: Connections. Synchronicity. Kismetical Happenings.
